Section 6. Playback on Computer (TrueStream)

This section describes how to playback tracks on your Jukebox through your computer's sound system instead of through the Jukebox itself, a feature called TrueStream.

6.1 Introduction to TrueStreamPrev Contents Next

Back during the early development of Dudebox, many people asked for the ability to play music stored on their Jukebox through their computers' audio systems and speakers. This can be especially useful, for example, for people who store music on a Jukebox and want to play it back on a workplace computer that is not supposed to store music files on a permanent basis. This is precisely what Dudebox Explorer's TrueStream feature allows you to do.

TrueStream streams tracks you select on your Jukebox through the USB connection to your computer, where it is played back using your favorite MP3 player software such as Winamp. Because Dudebox allows you to choose your own playback software instead some simple builtin player, you can take advantage of advanced playback features of your software such as visualization, audio filters, and transformations.

6.2 Streaming Your MusicPrev Contents Next

Using TrueStream is simple. Just select any audio tracks in Dudebox Explorer, right-click to open the context menu, select "Play Track", and then "Play in [name of software]". The default player is Winamp 2. Dudebox will then begin streaming the selected audio tracks to your computer. As soon as there is enough audio data streamed to begin playback, your selected MP3 player software will be invoked.

On slower computers, you may encounter some playback skipping at first. If this occurs, you should adjust the TrueStream compensation setting. Under the "Play on Computer" tab in the Configuration dialog, there is a slider. Slide it farther to the right side for increased compensation for slower computers.

6.3 External Playback Software IntegrationPrev Contents Next

6.3.1 Selecting Your Playback Software

TrueStream currently supports Winamp 2 and Winamp 3 by Nullsoft, dBpowerAMP Audio Player by Illustrate, and Media Jukebox by JRiver. Upcoming releases will add support for other players including Windows Media Player, MusicMatch Jukebox, and RealPlayer One.

To switch the player used by TrueStream, right-click on any audio track, select "Play Track", and then select "Choose Software Player...". You can also do this by going to the "Play on Computer" tab in the Configuration dialog and selecting the player you want to use.

6.3.2 Winamp 3 Support

While support for the other players does not require additional software, support for Winamp 3 does. For Dudebox to be able to communicate with Winamp 3 in a way that makes TrueStream possible, you need the "Winamp 2.x Plugin Manager for Winamp 3". We provide a link to the download on the same page as our Dudebox downloads. Due to legal reasons (the software belongs to someone else) we cannot bundle it directly into Dudebox.

6.3.3 Winamp 2.9x Media Library Support

Winamp 2.9 introduced a new feature called Media Library which is a generalized environment for browsing items that can be played back in Winamp. Dudebox Explorer 6.8.0 and higher supports integration into the Winamp Media Library for Jukebox, Jukebox C, Jukebox 2, Jukebox 3, and Jukebox Zen. Integration is not supported for Jukebox II-series devices or the MuVo. Please also note that Winamp 3 does not support plugins for its Media Library. Winamp 2.9 is actually newer than Winamp 3, and has this new feature. According to Nullsoft, Winamp 3 will soon be abandoned, and they will continue to extend the 2.x family of Winamp as 5.0. Confused? So are we.

To enable integration, first close any running instances of Winamp. The go to the "TrueStream" tab in the Dudebox configuration dialog. Select which device(s) for which you want to enable support. Click "OK" to close the configuration dialog, then reopen Winamp and go to the Media Library. You should see a new item for Dudebox Explorer in the left pane of Media Library. Click on that item and the right pane should display the contents of your Jukebox.

Using the right-click context menu or the buttons at the bottom of the right pane, you can either "Play" or "Enqueue" all tracks or tracks you select. "Play" clears Winamp's current playlist, populates it with the tracks you've selected, and begins playback immediately. "Enqueue" does not clear Winamp's current playlist. Instead, it appends the selected tracks to the end of the playlist. Double-clicking a track in the right pane of the Media Library will "enqueue" that track.

Please note that the Xtreamer engine must be enabled for playback to work in Media Library.

To disable Media Library integration, close Winamp, go to the "TrueStream" tab of the Dudebox configuration dialog, and deselect your device(s). Then click "OK".
